RC-41 (Sociology of Population) of International Sociological Association (ISA)

The International Sociological Association (ISA) is a non-profit organization dedicated to scientific purposes in the field of sociology and social sciences. It is an international sociological body, gathering both individuals and national sociological organizations. The ISA was founded in 1949 under the auspices of UNESCO. The goal of the ISA is to represent sociologists everywhere regardless of their school of thought, scientific approaches or ideological opinion, and to advance sociological knowledge throughout the world. The current president of International Sociological Association is Professor Geoffrey Pleyers who is also professor of sociology at University of Louvain, Belgium.

RC-41(Sociology of Population) of ISA is concerned with how sociological phenomena affect population structure and processes and vice versa. Both macro and micro approaches are encouraged as well as research addressed to integrating these two levels of analysis.The RC41focuses on conceptual and methodological development with the primary goal being an integrated and cumulative approach to the study of the articulation between population and social structure. Emphasis is placed on cross-cultural research with a maximum exchange of research findings. Special attention is given to policy-relevant research.Professor Walter BARTL (lecturer at institute of Sociology, Martin Luther University Halle-Wittenberg) is the current president of RC-41 whereas prof. Favour L. C. NTOIMO is current Secretary.

RC-18 (Social Demography) of Indian Sociological Society (ISS)

Indian Sociological Society (ISS) is the largest professional body of sociologists in India. The Indian Sociological Society (ISS) was established in 1951 in Bombay with 107 members. The key initiative in its formation was taken by G. S. Ghurye, the then Professor and Head of the Department of Sociology at the University of Bombay. The Society’s main activity then was the publication of the Sociological Bulletin which was started in 1952 and was printed biannually. Around the same time another initiative was taken by sociologists at Lucknow, R. K. Mukerjee and D. P. Mukerjee who established the All India Sociological Conference (AISC). They had their first conference in 1955 and between 1957 and 1961, they organised another 5 conferences. Now, it is an annual event that takes place in various parts of India with more than 28 Research Committees included in it.The current president of the Indian Sociological Society (ISS) is Prof Maitrayee Chaudhuri and the current secretary is Prof Shweta Prasad.

RC-18 (Social Demography) of Indian Sociological Society examines the intersection of demography with social distributions and dynamics, particularly population composition and differences in demographic distributions. It engages various social demographers, researchers, policy makers, Government and non-government organisations to understand and analyse these processes and take steps for better policy making. Professor Naresh Kumar, who is Professor of Sociology at central University of Gujarat is the convenor of RC-18 and Prof Chandrika K. B. is its co-convenor.

Circle for Child and Youth Research Cooperation in India (CCYRCI)

The CCYRCI was established in 1998 on the special initiative of University-College teachers and researchers to collaborate on common research areas related to children and youth. CCYRCI, a non-profit non-governmental organisation founded by eminent social scientists, educationalists and development experts, pursues programmes of research, training and action in the area of child and youth welfare. Placing children and youth at the centre stage, the Circle strives to expose their full potentials by offering them opportunities to realise their agency. The Circle also tries to enhance their capabilities and empower them to accomplish the goal of social and economic betterment. The CCYRCI brings out books, monographs and reports and makes them available to all those who are interested in childhood and youth issues.Professor Vinod Chandra (Principal Sri JNMPG, College, Lucknow) is the Executive Secretary of CCYRCI

 

Indian Association for the Study of Population (IAPS)

Indian Association for the Study of Population (IAPS) is a professional organization of Indian demographers like those operating in several social science disciplines like economics, sociology, geography, statistics, history, etc. It was formed in 1971 under the leadership of Prof Ashok Mitra and Shri A. Chandra Sekhar, successive Registrar Generals and Census Commissioners of India at the time. IASP is now one of the leading organization dedicated to advancing research and understanding of population dynamics in India. It serves as a platform for scholars, researchers, and policymakers to collaborate and exchange knowledge on various population and demography-related issues. IASP conducts research on population growth, fertility, mortality, migration, and other demographic trends and collaborate with different organisations to organise conferences and seminars on issues related to population and demography, contributing to informed policymaking and sustainable development in India. Prof. Suresh Sharma is the current President of the Association.

 

Indian Council of Social Science Research (ICSSR)

Indian Council of Social Science Research (ICSSR) was established in the year of 1969 by the Government of India to promote research in social sciences in the country. ICSSR provide grants for projects, fellowships, international collaboration, organizing seminar / conference, capacity building, survey, publications etc. to promote research in social sciences in India. Documentation center of ICSSR – National Social Science Documentation Centre (NASSDOC) – provides library and information support services to researchers in social sciences. The Council aims to review the progress of social science research and give advice to its users, sponsor social science research programmes and projects and administer grants to institutions and individuals for research in social sciences, institute and administer scholarships and fellowships for research in social sciences, indicate areas in which social science research is to be promoted and adopt special measures for development of research in neglected or new areas, give financial support to institutions, associations, and journals engaged in social science research arrange for technical training in research methodology and to provide guidance for research, co-ordinate research activities and encourage progrmmes for interdisciplinary research, develop and support centers for documentation services and supply of data, organize, sponsor, and finance seminars, workshops and study groups, undertake publication and assist publication of journals and books in social sciences and advise the Government of India on all matters pertaining to social science research as may be referred to it from time to time; and take such measures generally as may be necessary from time to time to promote social science research and its utilization.

 

India Health Action Trust (IHAT)

IHAT was instituted in 2003 as a Charitable Trust under the Indian Trust Act, 1882 and is registered with the Ministry of Home Affairs under the Foreign Contribution (Regulation) Act,1976, and with the Ministry of Corporate Affairs under the Companies (Corporate Social Responsibility Policy) Amendment Rules 2021. IHAT works closely with the Government of India and state governments to achieve public health goals. Their work is focused in areas of prevention and control of HIV and Tuberculosis, in achieving significant improvements in Reproductive, Maternal, Neonatal and Child Health, improved Nutrition among mothers and children, and strengthening health systems. Their work is aligned with the Sustainable Development Goals. They use program science to optimise and scale public health programs through partnership with governments and communities. Program science brings together program implementers, academicians, researchers, policy makers and community members in a continuous learning cycle of strategic planning, program implementation and monitoring and evaluation. It uses knowledge arising from program implementation to identify key research priorities and questions. The learnings from these research/program implementation are continuously integrated to optimise program design, delivery and evaluation. It strives to understand and adopt the right strategies for the right populations at the right time, at the appropriate scale with resource efficiency to improve the health of populations.

 

Population Services International India (PSI India)

PSI India has been at the fore-front of supporting the governments in ensuring accessible, affordable healthcare to most downtrodden in the society.
